LE 461L: Current Syntax: Theory and Analysis
One of the main objectives of the course is to make the students understand the core concept of the term ‘syntax’ and thereby also make them familiar that Chomskyan syntax is one of the syntaxes. There are many other competing theories of syntax that work more efficiently in dealing with the structures of languages other than English. HPSG is one of such syntactic modal that has been adopted by the linguists working on European languages. This, however, does not mean that we will not discuss the Chomskyan syntax. In fact, 90% of the topics will be from Chomskyan syntax. The role of the students in the course is paramount. They have to read the chapters given as self-reading so that a very fruitful discussion can take place in the class.
